About Encaustic Medium
Painting with molten wax was first recorded over 2000 years ago. Well known examples are Roman funerary portraits from 100 – 300 AD. The medium is made from beeswax and damar resin crystals, which adds strength and hardens the wax. I fuse each layer with a blow torch or heat gun, depending on the effect I want to achieve. The heat tool ensures each layer is fused to the last. The first image, "Dive to Death" has around twenty layers, each one has something different etched or drawn into it or placed in it such as gold leaf. This gives the image depth.
